...what, exactly, IS The Sovereign Stars? Can you use this without Twilight Imperium?

It's a moderately abstract strategic campaign game, loosely based off Starmada. Works fine as a standalone game, or you can (with some minor effort) use Starmada for tactical combat produced by SovStars actions.

If Dan's run out I've got a spare copy floating around I wouldn't mind getting rid of...

Actually, it depends.

I believe Rich's reply was based off the first edition, which was indeed a stand-alone game which could be used as a campaign generator for Starmada.

However, the version currently available via RPGNow is the second edition, and it does indeed require Twilight Imperium (1st Ed.) to play.

It's been "out of print" for years, so likely you'd only want it for the sake of its "collector's value"... :)

Seriously, I am in the middle of a revision -- look for a third edition in the next few months... ?
