Nova Edition, Naval-style Dreadnought

Postby BeowulfJB » Thu Apr 05, 2012 11:24 am

Here is my Large Dreadnought design. I wanted to be simple, well protected, have adequate firepower and good AA ability. All the weapons have Guided which means no modifications for range & Accuracy to make 'em more effective. All my ships will have these two. This will make it easier for me to play these designs. The Fire Control will help counteract ECM & Stealth that the target may have, and also will help with AA fire.

NAME: USS ARIZONA & others

5 Inch Strike Cannon (Acr/Gid) [TR2][RT2] 5-10-15 6 4 3 2 2 1 1 1 0 0 0 0

:?: Any thoughts from others? Is there something I have neglected that will make this ship less effective?

I prefer simpler designs, so I like it.
I'm not sure what the "RT" arc is, though, unless it's the opposite of "TR"? I don't think it's in my copy of the rules.

If that's the case, my only recommendation would be to consider slightly more restricted arcs for the secondaries, such as the "PP" and "SS." With the ranges on your weapons, you shouldn't have any problem keeping prospective targets on your broadsides, so the slightly more restricted arcs would be a slight cost savings, or allow for a few more secondary dice.

With no ECM or shields you're relying on your armor to slow down internal damage, so having at least as many armor boxes (or more) as hull is a good thing.

Sticking with her namesake, I think I'd like to see more oomph from those 5-inchers. More of them, honestly, rather than more power - the original did have 22 guns in that caliber after all. And while they're useful for AA fire, they're not in my eyes sufficient, without sacrificing offensive power. Maybe tack on some 3" short ranged guns for that duty?

And any thought of adding a few Drones to simulate the torpedo tubes?

I was going to save the drones for a DDG design. I could use seekers as torpedoes or as missiles. I need to read up on them and see whichw orks best as which.

I have modified the design of this ship to lower cost, yet increase resistance to Marines, increase thrust, and add close-range AA weapons. I must confess that having the cost exactly 400 is fun. And there is 153 spaces left. Hmmmm 153 Cargo? I could call this ship an a (Well) Armed Merchant ship...
Here is the revist design, as of Easter evening:

Stevens Ships ARIZONA-class Standard Dreadnought (400)
ARMOR [_][_][_][_][_]
[_][_][_][_] [_][_][_][_]
HULL [_][_][_][_][_]
[_][_][_] [_][_][_][_][_]
[_][_][_] [_][_][_][_][_]
[_][_]
THRUST [5][4][3][2][1] WEAPONS [_][1][2][3][4]
ECM [_][_][_][_][_] SHIELDS [_][_][_][_][_]
Fire Control

WEAPONS ARCS RANGE ATTACK DICE -4 -6 -8 -10
14 Inch Strike Cannon (Acr/Gid) [FX2][AX2] 6-12-18 16 11 8 6 4 3 2 1 1 1 1 0
5 Inch Strike Cannon (Acr/Gid) [TR2][RT2] 5-10-15 6 4 3 2 2 1 1 1 0 0 0 0
1.1 Inch Strike Guns (Acr/Gid) [TT4][TT4][TT4][TT4] 2-4-6 4 3 2 1 1 1 1 0 0 0 0 0

Any thoughts/ideas/comments. etc?

Here is my latest version. Having FX & AX for the heavy weapons makes these ships Very Costly. Therefore, the Heavy Torpedos will be the ship killers & everything else is support. The ships have 22 Hull & 45 Armor:

Stevens Ships ARIZONA-class Standard Dreadnought (423)
ARMOR [_][_][_][_][_]
[_][_][_][_][_]
[_][_][_][_][_]

[_][_]
THRUST [4][3][2][1][1] WEAPONS [_][1][2][3][4]
ECM [_][_][_][_][_] SHIELDS [_][_][_][_][_]
Cargo (265)

WEAPONS ARCS RANGE ATTACK DICE -4 -6 -8 -10
14 Inch Laser Cannon (Acr/Gid) [FX4][FX4][AX4][AX4] 6-12-18; 12 8 6 4 3 2 2 1 1 1 0 0

Would like to see the calculations for this.
Is the armour "Ablative"?
If so did you use 114 "Regular" armour to get the 76?
What ORAT & DRAT did it have?
Any tech levels?

If 503 is supposed to be the point cost, I'm a little dubious... :)

Tech Level is Zero.
The regular armor is 76, which means there is 51 Ablative Armor to protect the 22 hull.
The cost of 503 is what the DryDock gave me.
Keep in mind that this ship has Fragile Systems...
This was copied from the ship design page:
COMBAT RATING 503
— Offensive Rating: 1568.95
— Defensive Rating: 161.38

I guess (& hope) it looks powerful. 8-)
