Another unofficial faction...

Postby thedugan » Thu Mar 17, 2011 3:26 am

At some point, when Dan gets Starmada: Fleet Ops out, I plan on finishing this up - in the mean time, another faction....

DISCLAIMER: I'm not an artist.

I like the overall shape of the ship.
But, I've got a question before any suggestions.

There are what look like two distinctive shapes for what I'll call "pods."
There are elongated pods with bright lights emitting from them, and then there are the more rounded ones, with a lower intensity light emitting from a slitted opening.
What's the function of each shape?
If the pods with the bright lights are weapons pods then I guess they're okay as is.
If they're not weapons pods, then it seems like there are too many of them.

I hesitate to call myself an 'artist'....

Thanks for posting the annotations.
They really help picturing what you're trying to do.

My only suggestions would be to try have a little more disparity in size between the main fore and aft guns, and all of the defensive batteries. I can detect a little size difference, but I really have to look to see it.
Also, you might try having them not "lit up" quite as much. I'm defenitely not a sci-fi techie guy, but I'm assuming when the batteries aren't firing there would not be nearly as much light emitting from them as opposed to when they are firing.
You might try reducing the glow from the batteries just a touch.
Looks good in any case, though.

Overall, I like the shape, but (and please take this as the constructive criticism it is intended to be!) there is something about the color and/or texture of the hull that makes it looks a little "plastic-y". Also, and this is preference and not criticism, I would like to see turrets or something rather than the blended pod-type weapon emitters (or in addition to the "Big Guns"). The flat parts seem like they could easily have a couple of mounts on them without looking cluttered. I guess I'm just old fashioned that way. Keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Erik

Also, along with what Erik has said, if you look at the "forward disc" of the main hull, there's a very distinct difference between the texture of the rim of the disc, and the main part of the disc. You can really see the line where the two parts come together, but more than that, there's a very distinct difference in clarity of the two parts.
The rim is blurrier than the main part of the disc.
I don't know whether you were going for that effect, but that's what I'm seeing.
Hope we're helping. :)

If the intention is to make the forward firing weapons on the main body disc, and the weapons on the drive pods the same size, then it looks good. If they're supposed to be a different size, then the size of either needs to be tweaked. Hopefully that makes sense. :)
With respect to the rim of the disc versus the main body of the disc, the rim still looks blurry.
The texture, for lack of a better word, noticeably changes when going from the rim of the disc to the main body of the disc.
I'm not saying that's good or bad.
To me it just... changes.

I don't know it there's anything I can do to adress the bluriness.

I do think that the ship can be further improved, but I won't be able to even look at it again until Monday. i work 12 hour shifts on the weekends....
