Starmada: AE Drake Notation

Postby jimbeau » Fri Jan 04, 2008 3:59 am

Since the Admiralty Edition has changed the way we think about starships, I think it's time to update the Drake Notation for the Bourbaki Basin.

in general, the less information on the card, the better, except where defaults are concerned (then I'd like to see them spelled out like ST:X i.e. ROF 1 would be explicitly identified rather than assumed)

Here goes, whaddya think?
[EDIT] to bring into compliance with the Starmada SE Drake Notation [/EDIT]

<Starship_Name>
(<Combat_Rating>)<Class_Name> <Class_Designation> [<Race_designation>]
Tech Levels E<N> F<N> G<N> S<N> W<N>
Hull: <N> <N-1> <N-2> ... 1
Engines: <N> <N> <N> <N> ...
Shields: <N> <N> <N> <N> ...
Weapons: 1[X|Y|Z|-] 2[X|Y|Z|-] 3[X|Y|Z|-] 4[X|Y|Z|-] 5[X|Y|Z|-] 6[X|Y|Z|-]

[X] <Weapon_Type>, <RNG_1>/<RNG_2>/<RNG_3>, <ROF>/<IMP>/<ACC>/<DMG>

[Y] <Weapon_Type>, <RNG_1>/<RNG_2>/<RNG_3>, <ROF>/<IMP>/<ACC>/<DMG>

[Z] <Weapon_Type>, <RNG_1>/<RNG_2>/<RNG_3>, <ROF>/<IMP>/<ACC>/<DMG>

Specials: <Specials_List>

Fighters:
<Fighter_Name>: (Capacity), <Size>/<Speed>/<Attack>/<Defense>, <Traits_List>

And an example

I'm thinking that the Sonic Cannon may not work out very well in space...

(lol)

Not a bad thought on condensing the notation tho

Check out the imperial starmada sourcebook for the correct notation, this is not right according to that source book.

I'll update and build a new one as soon as I get a few moments of free time.

How are faceted shields represented in Drake Notation?

This is how I show Faceted shields in Drake Notation with the shipyard.
This is a hull 5 ship with Nine "Facets".

Faceted Shielding: [F:3 2 1] [FP:2 1] [FS:2 1] [AP:1] [AS:1] [A:0] [ 9 8 6 4 2 ]

This way the facets can be marked off if the Drake Notation is copied into a ship's notes in Vassal.

One other thing that I currently don't see an anwer for:

For multiple weapons in the same battery do you specify more than one line starting with [X], [Y] or [Z]?

Not quite sure if you meant Dual mode weapons.

Example:
Battery V: Proton Torpedo TL0, 1-4/5-8/9-12, 1/4+/1/2 // Proton Torpedo [Overcharged} TL0 1/5+/1/3
No Range Modifiers // D.Mode: No Range Modifiers, Carronade
[AB] [AB] [AB] [AB] [AB]

This is a dual mode weapon battery with five weapons (all AB arc).
If you use the shipyard this is all done for you on the text sheet. You can copy and paste the resulting Drake notation into any text prog. Also check out the other shipbuilders.

What is the conical Drake Notation? Is it the notation defined at the top of this topic or is it the output of the Ship Builder?

Because I am creating a program that will be reading these definitions and there seem to be some differences that might cause issues. Like the ship builder output seems to define both the starting and ending range for a bracket. The ship builder also seems to output the tech level for the weapon. And the ship builder output seems to not output the Tech Level line that the above notation defines.

Conical Drake Notation?
I guess that would be the one in the Rules Annex but that has not been officially updated (in print) to include dual weapon modes as far as I know.
If you only use the shipbuilder, go with that for now.

I can only speak for the shipyard, which has small differences due to it having a little more choice.

What sort of program are you writing? (just curious)

I am writing a program to play the Star Fleet Universe Armada games (Klingon/Romulan/Distant Armada) over the Internet. I currently have a service that allows people to play both SFB and Federation Commander and I will want to add Star Fleet Armada support.
