There was some debate on the SF-ConsimL list in the early days about 'realism' vs 'playability'.

If you look at games, the ones that win the awards and make a lot of sales aren't the ones that are realistic, but the ones that are more playable. Having shiny bits only helps.

That being said, realism does't hurt sales, just so long as it doesn't get in the way of fun.

Congrats, Dan - you've proven that your instincts are on target yet again.
