Y'all should know by now that I like to change gears more often than a '57 Edsel... :)

Anyway, rather than go with a mod of the Iron Stars game engine, I thought it might be interesting to try something different for SFO -- specifically, a more "mass combat" form of space battle game. Thus, I present to you a rough draft of the SFO Tactical Combat Simulator!

Why does this remind me of Battle Fleet Gothic? :-)

- do we need ship art? We've got some, but I'm not REAL happy with it and noticed there is none included.

- I like the idea of requiring a task force, if you've only ONE ship, I assume you can activate yourself. :-)

- How about 'special equipment':
..Spinal Mounts?
..Point Defense - each 'level' reduces the attackers Missile Attack Value by a single die.
.."Escort capability" that gives your ships the ability to use their PDS against missiles aimed at OTHER ships.
..One shot 'shield generators' - ships that have them can cover your entire task force, giving a '+' to the entire task force
..fighters? I can't see a place for them

- Having more than one 'hit point' per ship: for each hit reduce all die by one, last hit 'cripples' - I think even 20-ship groups could handle that insofar as mechanics. 4 hits tops.....escort, cruiser, battleship, Gigaship....

This feels more 'natural' than re-fitting the IS engine, It gives us ANOTHER project, however.... :-/

It shouldn't ... if anything, it's a cousin to Starmada, in that it shares the same ancestor (this game reminds me a lot of Starmada version 1).

Yes, eventually ship art would be nice. :)

I haven't decided exactly how it will work if you have no FCSs remaining -- right now the rules say the game is over if one side has no more C3 dice.

All things I intend to include... I wanted to make sure there were no howls of protest regarding the basic mechanics.

This feels more 'natural' than re-fitting the IS engine,

I agree.

It gives us ANOTHER project, however.... :-/

So?

It just does - I've never played it (have you ever PRICED it?) - but the simple ship cards and squadron movement just brings it up in my mind....

I *LIKE* simple, actually...

Okay, which project first? this one, or the OTHER one......or is this one of those "What do you want to work on today" things?;-)

You'll have situations where your last ship is a command ship....

Nope, not from me - might want to wait until Kevin weighs in - if he does (is he even on this list?) He wasn't too crazy about the 'corners we cut' with Iron Stars, this is even simpler...

I'll put out some more specific ideas if I have time this evening (I'm at work now, which is why I didn't respond earlier)...

Hey Dan...
I was looking at the PDF you posted.

How do you get the areas of color like that on the pages?

What editing package are you using?

Then how do you get those colored areas/background on the page? I haven't looked REAL hard at Open Office....

So...

Jim and I have managed to playtest this a couple of times this weekend... so far, so good.

Problems with determining how exactly to point-cost command ships, tho.

Hmm.

Actually, the colored bits are done by creating a page background in Photoshop, and then loading the picture into the document as part of the header/footer.

Thanks! My efforts so far look like crap, but after a usual weekend, I FEEL like crap, so - there is symmetry....Zathras is used to being beast of burden...

Wasn't able to work on the other thing too much, but hopefully you were able to look over the files section.....

..and I found out that someone had turned off 'display graphics' on my browser at home...no wonder that the forum looked weird.
