The paragraph stealthily says "open tabletop" instead of "hexless" :D

Lucky for you, the book already comes with guidelines for hexless play. The only tricky part is getting some sort of facing template.

The Hyperdrive and Overthrusters systems determine their Space Units with [Engine Factor x 0.5], when the book uses a x0.6 multiplicator.

Sadly not, but it sounds interesting. Certainly adds another tactical layer, as one side moves faster in one direction than another.
